Today he is known as one of the founders and major shareholders of Alfa Group, one of Russia's largest privately owned investment groups. Born Andrei Nikolayevich Kosogov on March 15, 1961 in Estonia (while it was still part of the Soviet Union), he took his Bachelor's degree in Science from the Moscow Power Engineering Institute. Upon his graduation, he went on to work as a commercial director for a small-scale company that was founded with the institute's help. It was in 1992 that he was first appointed by Alfa Group to supervise the formation of a privatization investment fund. Under his guidance, the company has expanded, and in 1998, he became the first deputy of the chairman of the bank to be responsible for all of the bank's investment funds. In addition to the above, Kosogov is the Chairman of the Board at Altimo, the telecom subsidiary of Alfa Group. Also, he was the one to oversee the cell network operator Vimpelcom, which merged with Egyptian billionaire Naguib Sawiris' telecom holdings in 2011 to form the sixth largest telecom company in the world today, Wind Telecom. As of last year, once Alfa Group agreed to sell a 50% stake in TNK-BP to the state-owned Rosneft oil company for $28 million, Andrei Kosogov became $750 million wealthier in cash. He was awarded Russia's Medal of Honor for his charitable works.
