Family speak out after Gold Coast funeral suicide
The grieving family of a man whose funeral was horrifically disrupted when one of his friends took his life in the back of a car have spoken out about their one final hope.
The sister of Raymond Mogg, who died early last month after his motorbike crashed, has shared her heartbroken family’s last wish following the funeral tragedy last week.
Spike Porter, 25, took his life on Tuesday at Pimpama Island Cemetery in Jacobs Well on the Gold Coast, where he had been to pay his respects to his good friend, Mr Mogg, 31.
Loved ones of Mr Mogg reacted immediately in a desperate effort to save Mr Porter, but he sustained critical head injuries and died before an emergency helicopter arrived.
As tributes continue to flood the internet in the wake of the deaths, the sister of Mr Mogg revealed that while her family was still in deep shock, there was “one thing” they hoped for Mr Porter’s family.
“I understand people have questions but we are all in so much shock and don’t even know the answers ourselves,” she wrote to social media.
“My family have been through so much. We lost our Ray Ray, we then had his first funeral date taken away [and] his second funeral date turned into more tragedy.”
She added the only thing Mr Mogg’s family wished for now was an opportunity for Mr Porter’s family to farewell him properly.
“We are in absolute turmoil but one thing we don’t want is for Spike’s family to not be able to lay him to rest peacefully and respectfully,” she wrote.
“It’s all we wanted and I am sure that’s what they want also. My deepest sympathy goes to this family.”
Mr Mogg’s mum, Desleigh, said in a Facebook fundraiser her son had died “while he was doing what he loved dearly”.
“Raymond was a loving and attentive family man, who would give anyone the shirt off his back and help all those in need especially his family he cared for deeply,” she wrote.
“We are distraught by what has happened and are going to miss him dearly. It’s hard to put my grief into words, there are so many ways to describe Raymond but hard to put together. “His beautiful cheeky smile will live on within all us and his smart remarks haha Raymond was a family man and went out doing what he loved best and that was riding bikes.”
Close to $13,000 was raised to support his family in the now-closed Facebook fundraiser, some of which paused their mourning at the funeral to try and save Mr Porter.
One mourner praised the selfless funeral attendees that put aside their grieving and sprung to action after Mr Porter was injured.
“I feel for those who were unable to say their goodbyes as they put aside their own farewells to try and save a life, which is admirable to say the least,” part of their post to Facebook read.
Another attendee said if the circumstances had have been different, Mr Mogg would have been one of the people trying to help.
“Ray would have done the exact same thing that those who missed their final goodbye did,” they wrote.
A GoFundMe fundraiser established in the wake of Mr Porter’s death has raised more than $23,000, with family and friends expressing deep distress over the horrible tragedy.

His older brother, Jaxon, paid tribute to him in a heartwrenching post to Facebook.
“I loved you more than you will ever know little brother, no measure of time will ever heal the whole you’ve left in me. To say you will be missed doesn’t quite cut it, I will remember and think of you for the rest of my days,” he wrote.
“You truly were one of a kind and this world will never be the same without you. ️I love you little brother.”
