PREMIERE | GOODING Releases Powerful Because It Hurts

Nashville’s GOODING premieres the music video for “Because It Hurts” today on CelebMix. The song is from the band’s just-dropped album Building The Sun, produced by Matt Wallace.

GOODING is made up of Gooding (vocals, guitar), Erin O’Neill (vocals, guitar), Jesse Reichenberger (drums, security), and Billy Driver (bass, black magic). The band’s music embraces blues-rock, Americana, and pop-soul. A contagious sound, GOODING’s music has been featured on CSI, Portlandia, the trailer for The Walking Dead, and a host of others.

They’ve also established a charity, called FundingTheFutureLive.org, to perform and speak to high school students about financial literacy. Because of its success and message, the charity has been featured on CNBC, NPR’s All Things Considered, and The Wall Street Journal. The band also supports PCRM (Physician’s Committee for Responsible Medicine).

“Because It Hurts” opens with tight skiffing guitars on a funky, blues-flavored tune. A slapping, thrumming bassline punctures the air with heft, as mighty drums propel the crunching shuffle. Give a close ear to Reichenberger’s touch on the high-hat, as he infuses the tune with snapping splashes of color.

Gooding’s voice imbues the music with taut textures and tantalizing timbres. When O’Neill’s tones enter, the resulting harmony achieves potently effective colors, along with a cutting edginess that’s superbly resonant.

Directed by Lonny Quattlebaum, the video was shot in black and white, giving it a Kafka-esque feel that’s enhanced by the collapsing wall digital effects. Gooding, framed by black monoliths closing in on him, pushes back as he sings about emotional vulnerability. Cuts to the band performing on stage mingle with shots of O’Neill and Gooding entangled in kaleidoscopic drifts, infusing the visuals with narrowing boundaries.

“Because It Hurts” exudes raw, gutsy energy boosted by forceful vocals replete with the steady succession of ripe passionate hues of ooh la la qualities. GOODING definitely knows how to turn up the heat.
