Born in Evanston, Illinois, Gilford is the son of Anne and Steve Gilford; his family has a mix of half Swedish and half Russian Jewish descent. During his younger years, he attended Evanston Township High School and later on studied at Northwestern University.
Before becoming a full time actor, Gilford was a nature enthusiast, and worked as a Trip Leader for Adventures Cross-Country, becoming a leader for teenagers who took adventure trips in places like British Columbia, Alaska, Hawaii, California, and the South Pacific. He was also involved at the YMCA Camp Echo in Fremont, Michigan where he served as a staff member.
Gilford’s acting career started in 2005, when he made a guest appearance in the television series “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit”. Despite having a slow growth in his career, he finally hit it big time when he was included in the show “Friday Night Lights”, playing the character of Matt Saracen. He was a series regular from 2006 to 2011, and played a recurring role when he show entered its fourth season up until the finale. The show not only boosted his career but also tremendously helped his net worth.
Meantime Gilford also worked in various movies, including “The Last Winter” in 2016, “Post Grad” with Alexis Bledel, and “Dare” opposite Emmy Rossum. He also guest starred in a number of other television shows including “The Matadors” and “Grey’s Anatomy”.
